DIAGNOSTIC STUDIES

Neurological
diagnostic testing.

Learn what EEG, EMG/NCV, and Transcranial Doppler testing involve.

Electroencephalogram (EEG)

EEG records the brain’s electrical activity through electrodes placed on the scalp while you are awake and drowsy. It can identify abnormal electrical patterns associated with seizure disorders. The physician considers the EEG results alongside your symptoms and medical history when deciding whether seizure medication is appropriate.

Electromyography & nerve conduction (EMG/NCV)

During the nerve conduction study, small electrical pulses stimulate the nerves to measure how quickly signals travel and the strength, or amplitude, of the response. The EMG portion uses a very fine, acupuncture-like needle to record electrical activity in the muscles.

Transcranial Doppler (TCD)

This ultrasound test measures the speed and direction of blood flow in major arteries within the skull, including the circulation supplying the brain from the carotid and vertebral artery systems. It helps the physician assess cerebral blood flow, particularly in patients with stroke or other cerebrovascular concerns. Dr. Hannanian determines whether it is appropriate for your symptoms, including migraine-related concerns.
